About Susan Judy

As an intuitive thinker and trained geologist I am interested in melding the unknown with the known.  My educational background in the earth sciences helps me look at the earth’s materials as both objects of beauty and objects of science. While geologic deposits have definite geographic components, I love to juxtapose different elements from diverse environments to create unique stone mosaics.

Since I was a small child I have seen designs flash before my eyes in the hypnagogic state prior to sleep.  Why I see these images and what to do about them has always plagued me.  In high school I designed clothes and later I sold collage greeting cards and hand-painted handbags.  In college I wanted to find a way to combine my artistic leanings with my analytical tendencies so I thought I might enjoy making jewelry.

Naively I decided to talk to the head of the geology department at the University of Idaho College Mines.  Fortuitously this professor was a renaissance man who did lapidary work and after retiring graduated from the Gemology Institute of America.  He said geologists did not usually make jewelry but encouraged me to take a class in geology.  The minute I met other geologists I finally felt at home spiritually and knew I was in the right place.  I believe that my mission is to share the beauty of rocks with others.  Whether through viewing ore deposits underground or cutting slabs for my stone pieces, I am doing what I am meant to do.
